Unlock SIM card

To unlock your SIM card, enter the PIN code that came with your SIM (or was provided in your digital eSIM activation mail). If you’ve lost your PIN or aren’t sure of the digits, it’s best to look for the code or contact your network provider rather than guessing. You only have a limited number of attempts; after that, you’ll need a PUK code to get back into the SIM. We explain more about how this works below.

Unlock the SIM card with your PIN

You use a four-digit PIN (Personal Identification Number) to unlock your SIM card. You’ll usually find this on the plastic card holder your SIM was originally attached to, or within the confirmation email/PDF if you are using an eSIM. If you’ve forgotten the code and have thrown away the packaging, you can often find it by logging into your account on your provider’s website or app. If you can’t find the right section or feel unsure, you should contact your provider’s customer service team directly for help.

Please note! If you have previously changed your PIN to a personal one, that is the code you must use. In this case, the original PIN on your account or card holder will no longer work.

It’s important to remember that you only have a limited number of attempts at entering the correct PIN. With most Irish providers, you have a maximum of three attempts, though a few may allow more. Double-check with your network, as you should never try to guess the code.

If you enter the wrong PIN too many times, your SIM card will be “blocked,” and you will then need what is known as a PUK code to unlock it.

How do you use the PUK code?

The PUK code (Personal Unlocking Key) consists of eight digits. It is used to reset your SIM if you have entered the wrong PIN too many times. You have ten attempts to enter the correct PUK code. If you fail on the tenth attempt, your SIM card will be permanently wiped (disabled), and you will need to order a new replacement SIM from your provider. Make sure you have the correct PUK and enter it carefully to avoid using up your attempts.

Do not confuse your PUK code with a Network Unlock Code (NUC). While they sound similar, they do very different things.

The difference between PUK and NUC codes

  • PUK code: Unlocks your SIM card if you’ve entered the wrong PIN too many times. Under ComReg regulations, Irish providers must provide your PUK code free of charge upon request.
  • NUC code: Unlocks the phone handset itself so it can be used with a different network provider.

It’s worth noting that nowadays, it is very rare to come across a locked mobile phone in Ireland. Following industry shifts and ComReg (Commission for Communications Regulation) standards, almost all phones sold in 2026 – whether on bill pay or prepay – are “SIM-free” or unlocked from the moment you buy them.

You would likely only need an NUC if you are using a much older device that was specifically locked to a provider at the time of purchase. Even then, that code is requested from your old provider and is completely separate from the PUK code used for your SIM.

How do you get your PUK code?

Just like the PIN, the PUK code should be printed on the original SIM card carrier (the credit-card-sized plastic) that your SIM was popped out of. 

If you don’t have that anymore, you can usually find it here:

  • Your online account: Log in to your provider’s self-service portal or app.
  • Via customer support: Call your provider or use their “Live Chat” feature.
  • On the provider’s website: Some providers have a specific “Find my PUK” tool on their support pages.

Can you disable the PIN code for the SIM card?

Yes, you can turn off the PIN requirement directly in your phone’s settings so you aren’t prompted for it every time you restart the device. Here is how to do it on the most common models in 2026:

Turn off the PIN on iPhone

  1. Open Settings > Mobile Service (or Cellular) > SIM PIN.
  2. If you use an iPhone with dual SIM or eSIM, select the specific number you want to manage.
  3. Toggle SIM PIN to the ‘Off’ position.
  4. Enter the current PIN if prompted. If you haven’t changed it, use the one that came with the SIM.
  5. Tap Done.

Turn off the PIN on Android (e.g., Samsung Galaxy)

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Security and Privacy > More security settings (or Enhanced security depending on your device).
  3. Select Set up SIM card lock or SIM card security.
  4. Tap the switch next to Lock SIM card to turn it off.
  5. Enter your PIN to confirm the change.
